ASTYPALAIA
AEGEAN'S BUTTERFLY

In the island constellation of Aegean Sea, Astypalea sparkles with a very peculiar light. It's geographically location tells it's story. Administratively it belongs in the Dodecanese Complex but geographically is located exactly in the center of Aegean Sea, in equal distance from Dodecanese and Cyclades complexes.

Ancient Greeks used to call it ''The Table of the Gods'', a name probably deriving from the big variety of flowers and perfumes that until today defines Astypalea, especially during spring. Astypalea's honey is famous for its quality and taste until today. Aristotelis named Astypalea ''Enemy of the snakes'' that from his era already, is the only island that does not have snakes. Romans used to call it ''Icthioessa'' due to the wealth of fishes in coasts that Astypalea has.

Today Astypalea has a medium-sized airport that allows connection with Athens International Airport and also with the biggest Dodecanese islands. Nautical connections might not be that often as in Cyclades, but they allow fast and effective transportation for both passengers and cargoes. Main villages are Astypalea also known as Chora, Livadi and Maltezana. Chora is one of the most beautiful of Aegean islands and has not got noisy shops and ugly touristic structures. Most of Chora's residences have been renovated without losing their classic architectural style.

The marvelous walls of the Querini castle that are sited on top of the white house complex of Astypalea have been restored with European Union's funds and they offer a sensational optical set. Always with the help of European Union the problem of water supply was solved, by building an artificial lake. Construction development exists, but it is of limited dimensions, especially if it is compared with the island's size but it has not affected with a negative way the beauty of the residence sites. The last 20 years, an upper level quality tourism has been developed.

Astypalea's tourism is moderate and even during summer period you can find relaxing and quiet beaches, stay in apartments or rooms. Its tradition which is still alive, is expressed with spontaneous cultural celebrations that have been disappeared from other islands. The one who enters this reality does not remain a viewer of local celebrations, but takes part in honest and mutual contacts with other people (local or not).

Aegean sea and Astypalea have many beautiful and easily accesible beaches. The sea is blue ,crystal and clear. Astypalea streches in a 100 square kilometres with a particular butterfly shape with anfractuous coats in an imaginary straight of 20 kilometres. The biggest part of the road network is consisted of asphalt roadway and very soon 100% of the road network will be consisted of asphalt roadway, and all the island will be turned to account.

The dimensions of Astypalea which are not very big allow the tourist to reach in every part of the island very easily and quickly. The great number of beaches and particular places offer to the tourist that often comes, the privilege of discovering great beauty close to his/her house. Some far located beaches offer the ability to enjoy absolute silence and to contact with a natural environment of especial beauty.
